Choosing between USDT and USDC for payments involves more than popularity. This article explains how their differences affect businesses and which stablecoin may be the better fit.
USDT and USDC let businesses receive digital payments without taking the same price risk associated with volatile cryptocurrencies. Nonetheless, they are not operationally interchangeable. USDT generally offers broader reach among crypto-native customers, while USDC better suits businesses prioritising reserve transparency, institutional controls, and regulatory clarity. Many companies can accept both and convert each payment into one preferred settlement currency.
As of August 2026, USDT and USDC had roughly $183 billion and $72 billion in circulation respectively, according to DefiLlama’s live stablecoin market data. The choice affects who can pay, which networks can be used, and how funds reach the company’s treasury.
USDT, issued by Tether, and USDC, issued by Circle, are dollar-referenced stablecoins backed by reserve assets. Each token aims to remain worth one dollar. Tether states that every USDT is backed by reserves equal to its stated value, while Circle describes USDC as fully backed by highly liquid cash and cash-equivalent assets.
A stablecoin is nevertheless a claim governed by the issuer’s terms, reserves, and applicable regulation. It is not simply a dollar stored on a blockchain. The route used to convert it into bank money also matters. Since both coins are dollar-denominated, a European company may avoid crypto volatility, but still face EUR/USD movements if it retains the tokens. The comparison must therefore include:

treasury currency
settlement method
operating region
USDT’s main commercial advantage is distribution. It is the largest stablecoin by circulating supply and is deeply embedded in exchanges, wallets, and peer-to-peer markets. Tether reported approximately $184.6 billion of USDT issued at the end of Q2 2026 and a stablecoin market share above 60% in its Q2 2026 reserves and financial figures update. That scale can make USDT practical when customers already hold stablecoins. Asking a buyer to acquire USDC solely for checkout adds an exchange step, a fee, and another opportunity to abandon the transaction.
USDT can be particularly relevant for cross-border B2B sales, digital services, and markets where dollar banking is limited but crypto exchanges are widely used. Its advantage is not inherently faster transfers, since speed depends largely on the blockchain. The benefit lies in the likelihood that the payer, exchange, and wallet already support USDT. For a merchant, USDT is primarily an acceptance decision: it lets more crypto-funded customers pay without changing assets first.
USDC’s strongest case appears after the payment reaches the business. Circle publishes USDC reserve holdings weekly, including minting and burning flows, and obtains monthly third-party assurance from a Big Four accounting firm. These arrangements are set out on Circle’s transparency and stability page. This cadence fits readily into counterparty due diligence, treasury policies, and audit files. Finance teams can review the reserve composition and document why USDC was approved. It does not remove risk entirely, but provides recurring evidence for governance reviews.
USDC may consequently suit regulated companies, institutional counterparties, and businesses whose boards expect a formal digital-asset approval process. An acceptance policy can draw on specific disclosures and redemption terms, with the issuer framework providing an additional basis for differentiation, rather than treating every dollar stablecoin as equivalent.
For comparison, Tether publishes quarterly reserve reports accompanied by independent assurance. Its Q2 2026 report was assured by BDO and showed assets exceeding total liabilities by approximately $4.11 billion. The distinction lies in the frequency, structure, and regulatory context of the disclosures. Businesses should compare the latest reports and record which standard satisfies their risk appetite.
There is no single USDT fee or USDC fee. Both exist on multiple blockchains, and the network determines the:
on-chain fee
confirmation process
congestion exposure
wallet compatibility
The same payment can be inexpensive on one network and uneconomic on another. Businesses should approve specific token-and-network combinations. “USDC on Ethereum” and “USDC on Solana” are separate routes with different contract addresses. Circle maintains an official directory of USDC contracts by blockchain, while Tether’s terms confirm that protocol support can change.
This prevents a common payment error: sending the correct token over an unsupported network. As discussed in our earlier article, recovery may be costly or impossible. Checkout should separately display the:

The system should verify all five before marking an invoice paid. Furthermore, network selection should follow customer behaviour. A low-cost chain creates little value if buyers cannot withdraw to it or the payment provider cannot settle from it. Availability, finality, fees and provider support must be assessed together.
Receiving a stablecoin and redeeming it with the issuer are different processes. Under Tether’s current terms, direct issuance and redemption require a verified Tether customer. Redemptions may also be subject to minimum amounts, conditions, and fees. Outside the EEA, direct redemption of USDC generally requires an eligible Circle Mint account under Circle’s USDC terms.
Many merchants instead use a crypto payment provider to confirm the transaction, screen it, convert the funds, and pay out the chosen asset or fiat currency. Daily cash flow is driven by the provider’s:
liquidity
exchange rate
settlement timetable
banking access
A goal for finance teams is to define the end state before enabling checkout. A company may:
accept USDT but settle in euros
accept USDC but settle in dollars
retain a limited balance for supplier payments
Each model drives distinct requirements, from accounting treatment through FX exposure to liquidity management. Compare providers across the complete path:

Stablecoin availability depends on where the business, payment provider, and customer are located. In the EEA, Circle issues USDC through its French electronic money institution under the EU Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation. Its MiCA USDC white paper provides EEA holders with a legal claim against Circle SAS and a right to request redemption at par, subject to anti-money-laundering checks. Circle France also received authorisation in April 2026 to provide USDC and EURC custody and transfer services across the EEA, according to its MiCA approval announcement. This gives USDC a clear regulatory route for EU-facing businesses.
USDT’s availability in the EEA should be verified with the company’s authorised provider. ESMA stated that national authorities should ensure CASP compliance concerning non-MiCA-compliant stablecoins no later than the end of Q1 2025. As of 5 August 2026, ESMA’s register of e-money tokens lists Circle’s USDC but contains no entry for Tether or USDT. A globally popular asset may therefore still be unavailable through a particular regulated venue
In the United States, the GENIUS Act established a federal framework requiring permitted payment-stablecoin issuers to maintain 1:1 reserves and disclose their redemption policies, while publishing monthly reserve information. Circle subsequently received final OCC approval to establish Circle National Trust, strengthening the federally regulated custody infrastructure supporting USDC, although the trust bank does not itself issue the stablecoin. Tether has taken a different approach by launching USA₮ specifically for the U.S. federal framework. This does not mean that USDT is prohibited in the United States, as the GENIUS Act also provides a route for foreign-issued stablecoins subject to regulatory comparability, lawful-order compliance, and other applicable requirements.
Regulation is therefore a threshold question. If a provider cannot offer or settle a token in the relevant jurisdiction, global liquidity cannot make it suitable.
Neither stablecoin should be treated as identical to insured bank money. Both depend on:
an issuer
reserve assets
custodians
banking relationships
blockchain infrastructure and continued market confidence
The European Central Bank identifies loss of confidence in redemption at par as the primary vulnerability of stablecoins because it can trigger both a run and a de-pegging event, as explained in its 2025 financial stability analysis. Businesses can reduce exposure by:
converting receipts automatically
limiting retained balances
diversifying settlement accounts
defining action if a token leaves an approved price range.
They should also check wallet screening and the treatment of frozen transactions, as well as those that are delayed or underpaid.
Operational risk deserves equal attention. Blockchain payments are usually irreversible, and bridged versions may lack native tokens’ issuer redemption rights. Circle states that it does not issue or redeem third-party bridged USDC in its bridged USDC terms. Businesses should whitelist exact native contracts rather than trust a familiar ticker. The relevant safety question is how much issuer, network, custody, compliance, and FX exposure remains after settlement.
Make the decision in a fixed order. First, eliminate any token-and-network pair that the provider cannot support in the relevant jurisdiction. Second, examine actual customer evidence:
Global supply data is a useful indicator of accessibility, but it is not a substitute for the behaviour of a company’s own buyers.
Third, choose the settlement currency independently from the checkout asset. If two customer groups prefer different stablecoins, both can remain visible at checkout while the provider converts receipts into one treasury currency. The business gains a broader payment menu without duplicating its accounting or cash-management process.

The Bank for International Settlements says money-like stablecoins require credible par redemption and low-risk, liquid reserves. Its 2026 analysis shows why reserve quality must remain an ongoing control.
A stablecoin payment policy should convert the comparison into specific operating rules. Before launch, the business should:
identify which customers already use USDT, USDC, and which networks
confirm that its provider supports those exact token-and-network pairs
define whether settlement will be in fiat, USDT, USDC, or a combination
document conversion rates, provider fees, and payout timing
whitelist official token contracts and reject unsupported bridged assets
establish payment confirmation and invoice-expiry rules
screen transactions in line with AML and sanctions obligations
set limits for stablecoins retained on the balance sheet
reconcile the blockchain payment, conversion, and bank payout under one transaction reference
Invoice denomination should also be explicit. A euro invoice can be paid with USDT or USDC through a time-limited conversion quote. The sale does not need to become dollar-denominated. The payment record should retain the:
invoice amount
stablecoin amount
rate source
quote expiry
amount received
final settlement
That evidence helps finance separate commercial FX effects from network or provider fees and process underpayments or refunds consistently.
The checklist covers the payment lifecycle rather than the token alone. Circle’s supported-chain guidance warns that sending unsupported tokens or bridged versions to a Circle Mint address can cause loss. Similar controls apply to any provider or stablecoin. The strongest policy does not assume that the customer’s payment asset must remain on the merchant’s balance sheet. Rather, it defines payer choice and treasury outcome as two separate variables, then connects them through controlled conversion and settlement.
